Mindfulness has been scientifically proven to be incredibly effective in teaching self-regulation, altering mind states positively leading to well-being and it is an incredibly powerful tool to have in one’s toolbox that can affect every aspect of one’s life. By becoming aware of our moment-to-moment thoughts and sensations we learn about our “stream of consciousness", which will then allow us to influence our emotions and behaviour. Mindfulness is a well-known element of Buddhist practice, including Vispassana. One of its main Western proponents is Jon Kabat-Zinn, who developed the mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program.
Studies have shown that mindfulness is very effective in improving a variety of psychological and physical conditions. Practicing mindfulness reduces stress and anxiety, decreases depressive symptoms and it is also effective in treating drug addiction, because it teaches how to handle any kind of emotion.
In addition, mindfulness practice can enhance experiences of heightened sense of well-being, greater insights and a calmer mind.
Teaching children mindfulness can enhance their connections with their peers and it creates feelings of peace and joy.
Thich Nhat Hanh, the world’s most well-known mindfulness teacher observes that:
At Elke Hutton Health and Healing Inc. we have observed firsthand the powerful effects that mindfulness can have on both physical and emotional pain states and it is a practice that is well worth learning and utilizing on a daily basis to support living in this busy world. It nourishes peace and a connection to all other beings, which fosters love, appreciation, gratitude and joy. Practicing mindfulness daily for 20 minutes is beneficial for children and adults alike. Mindfulness is also a much safer alternative to drugs and is well known to assist in pain control safely and effectively. In fact, mindfulness has been shown to replace the need for medications, even after surgical procedures. Elke has been successfully able to undergo minor and not so minor medical interventions without taking medications. At all.
